Musicians are a passionate bunch, they love hard and can, arguably, hate even harder. Sometimes that hatred is directed at fellow musicians with the end result being uncomfortable tabloid fuel. This episode of the Noise Pop Podcast covers those musical beefs and the culture that surrounds them. From the recent Mark Kozelek and War On Drugs scuffle, to the well-documented rivalry between the Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols, this podcast covers the gamut of feuding musicians. Who needs lyrics? There are so many great songs that kill the vocals and let the rest of the band do the talking. This episode celebrates some of the best instrumental songs in rock, pop, and electronic. The one rule we applied to this is that the artist has to historically be a vocal-fronted band (i.e. no Dick Dale, Explosions in The Sky, Budos Band, etc…). So, enjoy! We’ll leave you with the immortal lyrics of a saccharine late 80’s country hit “...you say it best, when you say nothing at all” Track Listing:

We know major chords make us feel happy, and minor chords make us feel sad. But beyond that, there is so much more to the composition of a song; it's a careful construction that can conjure up a variety of emotions, from anxiety to exuberance. So this episode, we're diving into the theory behind the songs we love and finding out what makes them so good from a technical perspective.
We decided to do this topic after reading the following articles about music criticism and composition. Check them out:

With so many new tracks in circulation recently, we've had a hard time narrowing down our choices for each episode. So we did things a little differently this episode and created a playlist for you, played all the way through with no interruptions. As much as we love to talk, we'll let the music speak for itself this time. New tracks from Wye Oak, Twin Shadow, Thee Oh Sees (surprisingly!) and a nod to the late DJ Rashad. |
