On Songs For Freedom, we highlight some of the powerful music that has been released or revived as a direct response to ongoing systemic racism against Black people and the recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and too many others at the hands of police. Diversity is at the core of the music that we share and cover on the Noise Pop Podcast and on this episode, we’re using this platform to focus on and continue to amplify black voices and art during this crucial time. No justice, no peace. BLACK LIVES MATTER.

It’s February and with Noise Pop Festival and SXSW on the horizon, we have a sneaking suspicion you’re pining for the best new releases that’ll feed your senses well into the year. This is why we’re here and the Noise Pop Podcast team raises you a world premiere from SF’s own Mikos Da Gawd from his debut album, ‘Hell Yeah Brother,’out March 4 on Text Me Records. You’ll hear Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah’s resurgent jazz sound; tribal-drum laden with warbles of brass and deliberate vocals from Saul Williams as well as the choice coupling of trenchantly lovelorn singer-songwriters Julia Jacklin and Faye Webster. We won’t steal production trio Planet Giza’s shine—but their latest track glows. Plus Helado Negro’s quietly ambrosial grooves and Mahawam’s mercurial electro hip-hop round out an exciting February slate. Press play.

Ahhh.. 2019 is here, which means it’s time for a fresh start, new experiences, and of course, looking ahead to a busy year of much-anticipated music. To kick things off, Berkeley-based Toro y Moi turn over a new leaf, breaking away from their pioneering hazy chillwave sound to lift our spirits with Outer Peace’s revitalized dance-driven jams. Sir Babygirl’s debut, Crush on Me, drowns us in a chaotic, cotton-candy infused Nickelodeon pop dream as she wails about euphoric infatuation and aching heartbreak (fittingly, it’ll be released the day after Valentine’s Day.) And DC’s Priests are back with the sinister, alluring prowl of The Seduction of Kansas that will surely leave you craving for more. Let’s dig in.

The end of the year is no doubt a time for rumination on the songs that spoke to us and speculating on which artists will continue to make an impact. In this episode, we bring closure by highlighting the best albums and songs of 2018; the soundtracks that manifested our own experiences. The year taught us to look inwardly, as in Charlotte Day Wilson’s “Doubt,” in which she contemplates leaving behind her vices. Love, she comes to realize, is one of them. Empathetically, Amen Dunes considers mythical heroism and the contradictions of the people we admire in “Miki Dora.” And the dashingly brazen “ Pearly Gates” by U.S. Girls evokes the macro message that the ostensibly pleasurable is the political. We won’t spoil the rest—2018: let’s wrap it up.

Episode playlist: 1. Charlotte Day Wilson - “Doubt” from Stone Woman 2. Kaia Kater - “Grenades” from Grenades 3. Amen Dunes - “Miki Dora” from Freedom 4. U.S. Girls - “Pearly Gates” from In A Poem Unlimited 5. Lucy Dacus - “Yours & Mine” from Historian 6. DJ Koze - “Illumination”  (feat. Róisín Murphy) from knock knock 7. Janelle Monáe - “Crazy, Classic, Life” from Dirty Computer

Before we recap our top albums of the year from all over the map, it’s time to stay true to our roots and spread the wealth of the Bay-Area artists that made 2018 memorable. We’re hooked on Tune-Yards’ eclectic patchwork of vocal loops with a piercing message. The easygoing, hypnotic croons and jangly guitars of Spooky Mansion have us feeling nostalgic for that Indian Summer unique to SF. Then there’s the late-blooming self-discovery mixed with jazzy, ethereal rhythm in the latest from astronauts, etc. We’ve also sprinkled in some of that new-new Rexx Life Raj featuring E40. Plus more we know you’ll really dig, no matter where you are. Episode playlist: 1. ODIE - “Noise” 2. Zola - “Blood/Sugar” 3. Same Girls - “Inner Space” 4. Tune-Yards- “Colonizer” 5. astronauts, etc. - “Visitor” 6. Meernaa - “Good Luck” 7. Rexx Life Raj feat. E40 - “Sprinkle Me” 8. Spooky Mansion - “Alright”

Two years ago, we released an episode entitled "Where Are All The Female Festival Headliners?" which looked at the utter lack of big name female acts atop music festival bills, despite no shortage of qualified female-fronted acts to fit those slots. Journalist Alyssa Pereira (SFGate/SF Chronicle) joins host Adrian Spinelli once again, to look at how the festival industry has progressed...or hasn't, in the two years since. Also joining the show, is University of Chicago Data Scientist Rob Mitchum, whose festival gender balance-tracking data visualizations have appeared in Pitchfork for the past two years.

Musicians are a passionate bunch, they love hard and can, arguably, hate even harder. Sometimes that hatred is directed at fellow musicians with the end result being uncomfortable tabloid fuel. This episode of the Noise Pop Podcast covers those musical beefs and the culture that surrounds them. From the recent Mark Kozelek and War On Drugs scuffle, to the well-documented rivalry between the Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols, this podcast covers the gamut of feuding musicians. Who needs lyrics? There are so many great songs that kill the vocals and let the rest of the band do the talking. This episode celebrates some of the best instrumental songs in rock, pop, and electronic. The one rule we applied to this is that the artist has to historically be a vocal-fronted band (i.e. no Dick Dale, Explosions in The Sky, Budos Band, etc…). So, enjoy! We’ll leave you with the immortal lyrics of a saccharine late 80’s country hit “...you say it best, when you say nothing at all”

We know major chords make us feel happy, and minor chords make us feel sad. But beyond that, there is so much more to the composition of a song; it's a careful construction that can conjure up a variety of emotions, from anxiety to exuberance. So this episode, we're diving into the theory behind the songs we love and finding out what makes them so good from a technical perspective.
We decided to do this topic after reading the following articles about music criticism and composition. Check them out:

2. “Blue Moon” -- Beck, Morning Phase
