We're back in April with a mix of new music and an interview with Aussie singer/songwriter Stella Donnelly. Stella sits down with Adrian ahead of her sold out show in San Francisco to talk about her recently-released debut LP, Beware of The Dogs, and to answer an age-old question: Why do Australians love the Simpsons so much? Our 4th annual SXSW episode is here and we're bringing you music and conversations with some of our standout artists from the festival. Back in 1993, Noise Pop Festival got started with the promise of "Five Bands For Five Bucks!" at The Kennel Club on Divisadero St. Now, 26 years later, over 150 artists grace the finest venues in San Francisco, Oakland and more, for the week-long affair. We crossed the city a couple of times to catch up with Anemone and Baths ahead of their NP Festival shows and then re-grouped with Noise Pop talent buyers James Lopez and Niki Bodemann, to talk about our favorite moments of the festival. It’s February and with Noise Pop Festival and SXSW on the horizon, we have a sneaking suspicion you’re pining for the best new releases that’ll feed your senses well into the year. This is why we’re here and the Noise Pop Podcast team raises you a world premiere from SF’s own Mikos Da Gawd from his debut album, ‘Hell Yeah Brother,’out March 4 on Text Me Records. You’ll hear Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah’s resurgent jazz sound; tribal-drum laden with warbles of brass and deliberate vocals from Saul Williams as well as the choice coupling of trenchantly lovelorn singer-songwriters Julia Jacklin and Faye Webster. We won’t steal production trio Planet Giza’s shine—but their latest track glows. Ahhh.. 2019 is here, which means it’s time for a fresh start, new experiences, and of course, looking ahead to a busy year of much-anticipated music. To kick things off, Berkeley-based Toro y Moi turn over a new leaf, breaking away from their pioneering hazy chillwave sound to lift our spirits with Outer Peace’s revitalized dance-driven jams. Sir Babygirl’s debut, Crush on Me, drowns us in a chaotic, cotton-candy infused Nickelodeon pop dream as she wails about euphoric infatuation and aching heartbreak (fittingly, it’ll be released the day after Valentine’s Day.) And DC’s Priests are back with the sinister, alluring prowl of The Seduction of Kansas that will surely leave you craving for more. Let’s dig in.

The end of the year is no doubt a time for rumination on the songs that spoke to us and speculating on which artists will continue to make an impact. In this episode, we bring closure by highlighting the best albums and songs of 2018; the soundtracks that manifested our own experiences. The year taught us to look inwardly, as in Charlotte Day Wilson’s “Doubt,” in which she contemplates leaving behind her vices. Love, she comes to realize, is one of them. Empathetically, Amen Dunes considers mythical heroism and the contradictions of the people we admire in “Miki Dora.” And the dashingly brazen “ Pearly Gates” by U.S. Girls evokes the macro message that the ostensibly pleasurable is the political. We won’t spoil the rest—2018: let’s wrap it up.

Before we recap our top albums of the year from all over the map, it’s time to stay true to our roots and spread the wealth of the Bay-Area artists that made 2018 memorable. The easygoing, hypnotic croons and jangly guitars of Spooky Mansion have us feeling nostalgic for that Indian Summer unique to SF. Then there’s the late-blooming self-discovery mixed with jazzy, ethereal rhythm in the latest from astronauts, etc. We’ve also sprinkled in some of that new-new Rexx Life Raj featuring E40.
