It’s February and with Noise Pop Festival and SXSW on the horizon, we have a sneaking suspicion you’re pining for the best new releases that’ll feed your senses well into the year. This is why we’re here and the Noise Pop Podcast team raises you a world premiere from SF’s own Mikos Da Gawd from his debut album, ‘Hell Yeah Brother,’out March 4 on Text Me Records. You’ll hear Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah’s resurgent jazz sound; tribal-drum laden with warbles of brass and deliberate vocals from Saul Williams as well as the choice coupling of trenchantly lovelorn singer-songwriters Julia Jacklin and Faye Webster. We won’t steal production trio Planet Giza’s shine—but their latest track glows. Plus Helado Negro’s quietly ambrosial grooves and Mahawam’s mercurial electro hip-hop round out an exciting February slate. Press play. |

Who needs lyrics? There are so many great songs that kill the vocals and let the rest of the band do the talking. This episode celebrates some of the best instrumental songs in rock, pop, and electronic. The one rule we applied to this is that the artist has to historically be a vocal-fronted band (i.e. no Dick Dale, Explosions in The Sky, Budos Band, etc…). So, enjoy! We’ll leave you with the immortal lyrics of a saccharine late 80’s country hit “...you say it best, when you say nothing at all” Track Listing:

The episode where we give thanks to the songs that got away. This is a mix dedicated to the best tracks of the year that flew under the radar. Sometimes they were quietly old acts in new clothes, other times they were brand new artists, regardless of the reason these songs are stellar and were sorely underrepresented in the blogosphere and hype machine. This mix also acts as a sort of best track of the year (b-side) mix. So get ready for the season of ‘best of…” Tracklist: 1. “That Awful Sound” -- Jackson Scott, Melbourne 2. “Get It” -- Run The Jewels, Run The Jewels 3. “Mean Streets” -- Tennis, Small Sound EP 4. “Bathroom Laughter” -- Pissed Jeans, Honeys 5. “Living Lens” -- Mountains, Centralia 6. “On Fraternity” -- Dead Girlfriends, Stop Pretending EP 7. “Ego” -- Mr. Carmack, single 8. “Kerou’s Lament” -- Ellery James Roberts, single 9. “Sin Guia No” -- Juana Molina, Wed 21 10. “Dreamy Summer” - Moonface, Julia With Blue Jeans On |

Last episode, we played songs catchy and infectious enough to earn a spot on our Indie Song of Summer playlist. This week though, we're playing songs with structures and sounds a little too unique for summer pop, but just challenging enough to enjoy, from the appealing dissonance of Suuns to the curious and intense noises of Oneohtrix Point Never. |
Sun, 25 August 2013
Song of the summer starts like summer itself, hopeful, exciting, and you can't wait for it to begin. Once it's here you dive in, listening to it obsessively and it gradually becomes your temporary anthem. Undoubtedly Blurred Lines was the pop song of the summer, but we're going to explore the songs that kept the indie blogosphere buzzing from June-August instead. This episode documents what the indie songs of the summer were for 2013. Each of these tracks have been blasting from parks and backyard barbecues all summer long, soundtracking the season. Enjoy! |

Before the Internet changed everything there were two distinct and opposing types of popular music, Indie and mainstream. It was the head versus the heart, the cool kids versus the pop kids and you had to come down on one side or the other. But the lines have been blurring over the past decade and those sides don't mean much any more. We now live in a world where pop music is so strange and creative that it's found acceptance with rock critics and indie snobs. Listen as we explore the genre-transcending melodies of Justin Timberlake, the indie-friendly quirkiness of Solange, (sister of mega pop star Beyonce) and the possibly ironic but ultimate acceptance of Hall and Oates. |

Maybe it's the record high temperatures or the long weekend, but we're feeling a little distracted. Thoughts of being poolside or at the beach are taking up too much space in our heads for us to get any work done. So we've decided to feed these wandering thoughts with some great additions to your summer playlists. From Washed Out to jj, we're playing some new tracks that are sure to convince you that, "it's really hot out" is a totally legitimate excuse for skipping work. |

We've all thought about this - what to play during that certain time with your loved one (or the one you just met) to set the mood? The right music can really make a good intimate moment better; and a bad music can end that moment altogether. So from the soft and sweet to hardcore, we've put together a list of some indie tracks to start your evening, or afternoon, or first thing in the morning off right; no matter what kind of music you're into. |

They say music is math, and we couldn't agree more. This episode explores the numbers behind some of the most unique rhythms in pop music. Sometimes we get bored with a typical four-to-the-floor beat, so we discuss and play some of our favorite pop songs of all time that utilize odd time signatures. And, for those of you who have no idea what a time signature is, we do a very quick explanation toward the beginning. Enjoy! Tracklist: |

It’s been building for 3 months and now it’s finally here, the indie song of the summer! There are several ways to define a song as a great summer song: it can be carefree, sweet, propulsive, lazy, emotional, detached, it can be anything really. The one thing it must have is the collective acknowledgment that “this is the soundtrack to my season; this is what I'm going to remember summer 2012 by" . The following list of songs are what defined summer for many of us and based on the quality of the list it's clearly been a good year for music. So enjoy! |

We know you're out there. In public, you're proudly listening to the latest in indie obscurity. But every now and then, when no one is looking, you're singing along (and maybe dancing a little) to those ubiquitous earworms known as pop songs. Maybe they're your guilty pleasure, or maybe you admire the production and songwriting, or maybe they're just the tune you have stuck in your head even though you've never listened to the song on purpose. Either way, in this week's episode, we're taking a break from the best in indie and indulging in our latent pop tendencies. But don't worry, we haven't completely jumped the indie ship. We've curated a list of indie-approved pop tunes - songs that, in one way or another, have been created, covered, or just embraced by the indie community. Some of these tracks are discussed and analyzed, but others are just pure indulgence, because let's face it -- sometimes, we all just need to hear some Beyonce. Tracklist: 1. "Dancing On My Own" -- Robyn, Body Talk Pt. 1 |

A few weeks ago, NPR asked us to come up with a list of definitive Noise Pop (the genre) songs for their website, NPR.org. It was a tall order and a fascinating challenge for us, and of course, we eagerly accepted. With tunes from the early '70s to modern songs released just a few months ago on our radar, we studiously dove into the decades to find the top 100. We sorted them chronologically in order to to show the evolution of the sound. The full list will post on NPR later this month, but for now we've assembled a teaser podcast episode that chronicles the genre's migration over the past 4 decades. Enjoy this sampler platter and stay tuned for the announcement of the full list coming soon. Tracklist: 1. "Rock & Roll” – The Velvet Underground, Loaded (1970) |

It's May, and while spring isn't technically over for another month or so, it's fair to say the search for the elusive song of the summer can officially begin. It might be a little too early to make the call, but Dawson thinks he's found a contender for that coveted title. Later this summer you can expect an episode that exclusively tackles this topic, but for now you can consider this a teaser. And either way, if these ten songs are any indication of the summer to come, you're going to like the sound of it. Enjoy this mix of 10 new songs you need to hear now... |

There is an unofficial game music nerds play online; it's silly, it's futile and it is incredibly addictive, it's 'guess the festival lineup'. Music fans spend hours researching what bands are likely to play what festival and they share their predictions online where they argue endlessly about it. The best predictions are usually based on record release dates, tour schedules, the last time a band played a certain festival, what kind of sound they a band is, etc... All festivals get this treatment, but no festival is obsessed over quite as much as Coachella. It's the white whale of lineup predictions and it seems to start earlier each year. So, with this year's festival coming to a close we decided it would be novel to take the first known stab at next year's festival lineup. We brirefly discuss this year's artists and then dive right into our logical choices for 2013. Of course, nothing is confirmed, these are merely guesses, but as you'll hear it's a hell of a lot of fun to play this guessing game. |
